About the Concessionary Travel Scheme The Tyne and Wear Concessionary Travel Scheme provides free or reduced price travel for Tyne and Wear residents aged under 16, 60 and over and those with certain disabilities.
Details of the fares available are shown below. For full details about how to apply for passes to show that you’re entitled to these fares, see In This Section. Changes to the national Concessionary Travel Pass scheme from 6 April 2010 The Government has changed the age at which people become eligible for a Concessionary Travel Pass. From 6 April 2010 people no longer receive a free bus pass when they reach their 60th birthday. Instead both men and women become eligible in line with the rise in the age at which women become eligible for a state pension. This is rising on a sliding scale, from 60 to 65, between 2010 and 2020. If you were 60 on or before 5 April 2010, you can apply for your Concessionary Travel Pass immediately. If you turn 60 after 6 April 2010, please click here to see when you are entitled to receive a Concessionary Travel Pass Information for people who do not live in Tyne and Wear Children aged under 16 who do not live in Tyne and Wear should pay the commercial child fare at all times when travelling in Tyne and Wear. If you are aged 60 or over, or are disabled, and do not live in Tyne and Wear, you can travel free of charge on local buses in Tyne and Wear between 9.30am and 11.00pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends if you have a National Concessionary Bus Pass. If you don't have a National Concessionary Bus Pass, or are travelling on Metro, the Shields Ferry, or Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland, you should pay the adult fare at all times.
