What’s Pop blue?
If you’re aged 18 or under, Pop blue is a brand new way to pay for your journeys on the Shields Ferry; just load a balance onto your Pop blue card and use it to pay for journeys as you make them. A Pop blue card gives you special discounted fares on the Shields Ferry that are much cheaper than buying adult Single or Day Tickets.
You can also use your Pop blue balance on the Metro and on buses, but it works differently, find out more in our Pop blue FAQs.
Who can use a Pop blue card?
Pop blue is for 16-18 year olds. Under 16s can also use Pop blue but child fares could actually be cheaper.
How much does it cost?
Pop blue is simple and affordable. A single journey on the Shields Ferry will cost you £1, or travel all day for just £2.
How does Pop blue work on the ferry?
Just tell the ferry operator which ticket you want to buy, and then touch your Pop blue card on to the reader on the ticket machine. Take your ticket from the machine as normal. The cost of the ticket will be deducted from your Pop blue balance. Your new balance will be printed on your ticket.
Please note that, unlike on Metro, there is no daily price cap for journeys on the Shields Ferry.
Will I need to prove how old I am when I travel?
You may be asked for proof of age when travelling on the Shields Ferry with a Pop blue card; here's what we'll accept as ID:
- Full or Provisional UK/EU driving licence
- ID card with the PASS hologram
- NUS Extra card
- Under 16 Pop card (can be expired)
- Pop card with a valid 16-18 entitlement
- Passport or birth certificate (can be a copy)
