Christmas and New Year 2018

Public transport will be running throughout the 2018 festive period, apart from on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. A summary is below, and in the table attached. Or get full details by going to our Live Travel Map.

Metro

There are no Metro services on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

On Christmas Eve, Monday 24 December, there's a normal weekday service until about 6.30pm, when trains will be half hourly through Newcastle city centre and hourly in all other areas until about 11pm

On Boxing Day, Wednesday 26 December, there will be a Saturday service from about 8am until about 8pm (the exact time depends on your destination). Please note that Sunderland station, which is managed by Northern Rail, is closed on Boxing Day and passengers should use Park Lane instead.

From Thursday 27 December until Sunday 30 December Metro services will run to the usual timetables.

On New Year’s Eve, a normal weekday service will run until about 10pm, then services every 30 minutes (every 15 minutes through Newcastle city centre) until about 11pm (the (the exact time depends on your destination). There will be extra services between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Buses

There are no bus services on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

On Christmas Eve, Arriva will run a weekday service; Go North East and Stagecoach will operate a Saturday service. Buses will run until about 6.00pm, then a reduced service until 7.30pm, when most services will finish.

On Boxing Day the main bus operators will run some daytime services, with additional services paid for by Nexus. See the Boxing Day leaflet below for more information.

On Thursday 27 and Friday 28 December services run by the main bus operators will run to Saturday timetables. They'll be running to normal Saturday timetables on Saturday 29, and to normal Sunday timetables on Sunday 30 December.

On New Year’s Eve most bus operators will run a Saturday service until about 6.00pm, then reduced services until 7.30pm, when most bus services finish.

Shields Ferry

There are no Shields Ferry services on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

On Christmas Eve there will be a normal Monday service with an early finish. On Boxing Day ferry services will operate to a Sunday timetable. The ferry will run to its normal timetable on other days.

Rail (Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland)

There are no Northern Rail services on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day.

Northern Rail will operate normal services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve with a reduced timetable from 7pm.

Nexus TravelShops

All Nexus TravelShops will open until 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

They will open as normal on other weekdays.

Nexus Customer Services  (0191 20 20 747)

Nexus Customer Services will open from 8am until 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

It will open as normal on other weekdays.
