Bikes are a great way to get around – either from your doorstep to destination or by combining cycling with using public transport.
Nexus has invested to improve the integration between cycling and public transport, by providing new high quality storage at Metro and bus stations. We are also making sure cyclists have the right information to plan their journey.
And we’re working with partners in the North East Combined Authority area to improve routes and signage to and from major interchanges and other destinations.
All bikes can be carried on the Shields Ferry and local train services (maximum numbers apply).
Folding bikes can be carried on the Tyne and Wear Metro at any time.
Non-folding bikes can now also be taken on Metro stations and trains between Callerton Parkway-Jesmond, Manors-Jesmond (via Whitley Bay), Gateshead Stadium-South Shields/South Hylton during Monday to Friday 10.00am-3.00pm, Monday to Friday 7.00pm until end of service and all day at weekends. Find out more about taking your non-folding bike on Metro here.
For safety reasons, dismount your bike on approaching the Metro station. Never ride your bike in stations or on platforms.
All Metro stations now have cycle storage at them or (in city centres and at Airport) somewhere close by - often these are new secure ‘Streetpods’ with covered protection for front wheels.
Smart cycle lockers, which you can access with a Pop smartcard, are also available at some stations, visit Cycle lockers to find out more.
