From Benton Metro Station, exit from Platform 1 directly onto Station Approach Road; from Platform 2, cross over the bridge to join the same road. Walk along the pavement for 100 yards or so to join the main road at The Beeches. Continue in the same direction to the traffic lights at the junction with Whitley Road. Cross over the busy Whitley Road with great care. Turn left and walk for about 250 yards, passing the entrance to Whitley Park sports ground to reach a metalled lane opposite a children’s play area. Turn right and go down the lane the short distance to the entrance to the Newcastle United Training Centre (A).
Bear right to go down a broad track and follow the track as it winds its way between the sports fields. Immediately on the left are the Newcastle United training facilities, while on the right is Whitley Park. You soon walk past some grazing land on your right, beyond which the white buildings are those of the Coach Lane Campus of Northumbria University. A short distance further along the track, on the right, are the Newcastle United Academy facilities for young players and you might be able to do some talent spotting! The track eventually draws close to the main London to Edinburgh railway line before meeting a metalled path beside a bridge over the railway (B).
Don’t cross the bridge, but instead turn right and follow the path behind modern housing on your left. At a junction of paths bear right and continue along the path as it bears left between the houses. Cross two minor roads with care and proceed as far as the main road (Coach Lane) (C).
Turn left and cross the road at the pedestrian traffic lights. Walk straight ahead down the “Coxlodge Waggonway”. This pleasant tree lined track soon passes a school (Heaton Manor) on the right. Cross the busy Newton Road with care and continue along the signposted waggonway, just to the left of the Newton Park pub (D).
The track passes, on your right, two important sources of employment, the Department of Work and Pensions and the Inland Revenue offices. On the left, it passes St Francis Church (1953), and then the Freeman Hospital, renowned for its pioneering heart surgery. Another school (St Mary’s RC Comprehensive) stands on the right before the track eventually reaches the main Benton Road where there are ten shallow steps down to the pavement (E).
Turn left and proceed straight ahead, using the pedestrian lights to cross Freeman Road and Haddricks Mill Road to arrive at the Brandling Villa pub. Turn right, then left to make your way up Station Road (South Gosforth Bank). The pavement climbs quite steeply past a parade of shops with cafes before reaching South Gosforth Metro Station and the end of the walk.
