Improvement Works - seven day Major Line Closure Saturday 17 to Friday 23 February

During the line closure buses will replace Metro trains between Airport and South Gosforth in both directions.

The closure is needed so we can replace 1,400 metres of overhead power line.  While the section of line is closed, we’ll also be carrying out the following secondary works:

  • Replacing 1,592 metres of track
  • Station maintenance
  • Track inspections
  • Lineside estate management
  • Cabling and signalling work
  • Substation work
  • Car park improvement work

Trains will return to service between Airport and South Gosforth on Saturday 24 February.

Replacement bus service 901
You'll still be able to make your journey as the replacement bus service number 901 will call at or close to all stations between Airport and South Gosforth.

Metro tickets and passes will be valid on the replacement bus or you can buy your ticket from the bus driver. If you have a smartcard remember to touch in and out at the start and end of your journey.

Journey times on the replacement bus will be longer than on Metro, and the buses may be affected by road congestion, but we’ll do all we can to keep to the planned bus timetable.  Your journey will take longer especially if transferring between more than one mode of transport.  Please check train and bus times before travelling

During the closure trains will be running frequently between:

  • South Gosforth and South Hylton
  • South Hylton and South Gosforth
  • South Shields and St James
  • St James and South Shields

See the latest service updates and track your train in Real Time by using the Pop app.

Fawdon level crossing
The level crossing at Fawdon will be closed to both pedestrians and road vehicles during the work.

An alternative walking route (via Wansbeck Road) is available to access the other side of the level crossing, it will take about 15 minutes to walk the route.  A map of the walking route is available below.

If the alternative walking route is not suitable please use the taxi shuttle service that will be running between 5.30am and 12.15am each day of the line closure, to transport you to the opposite side of the level crossing. The taxi shuttle service pick up locations and timetable is available below.

There will be road diversion signs in place and roads may be busier than usual so please leave extra time for your trip.

Works compound areas
In Fawdon car park about eight parking bays (including disabled parking bays)  will be used as a works compound, from 15 February until 23 February.  A section of Callerton Parkway car park will also be used for a works compound until the end of July 2024.  The compounds will be used for storing materials and equipment for this line closure and future improvement works.
