Metro’s modernisation programme is funded by the Government. By March 2024 a total of £446m will have been invested on the renewal of Metro infrastructure since work began in 2010

Metro infrastructure modernisation work 2010 to date:

35 Stations refurbished
65km of track renewed or refurbished
52 Switches and crossing renewed or refurbished
52 sets of points motors replaced
6.5km of track drainage installed
33km of cable troughing refurbished
85km of signalling cable replaced
62 bridges structurally repaired
3 bridges completely replaced or replaced
5 bridges removed in their entirety and infilled
27 escalators and 12 lifts replaced
A new rail tamping machine acquired
2km of earthworks repaired through ballast retention and stabilisation
65km of overhead line replaced
Replacement of help points, the public address system and 500 CCTV cameras
A new Radio System installed
A new Rail Traffic Management System (RTMS) installed

This is on top of the completion of the £104m Metro Flow project which saw three key sections of Metro line dualled.

Nexus has procured the delivery of a £362 million train fleet, with the support of the Government. Stadler, the Swiss train manufacturer, won the contract to design, build and maintain the new fleet. View the new Metro fleet here.

Seven day Major Line Closure 2024 Major Line Closure Saturday 17 February to Friday 23 February 2024 No trains between Airport and South Gosforth Buses will replace trains between Airport and South Gosforth in both directions for seven days from Saturday 17 February, while we replace 1,400m of overhead power lines and carry out secondary works. Trains will be running frequently to all other stations but may not be to the usual timetable. The replacement bus service number 901 will run between Airport and South Gosforth in both directions. Please plan your journey in advance and leave extra time for travel, as your journey will take longer. Train services between Airport and South Gosforth will resume on Saturday 24 February. If you need step free access and want to leave the train at Park Lane platform 1, please stay on the train to University, change platform and return to Park Lane platform 2. Other work - Manors lift outage Manors lift outage Manors platform 1 lift outage The lift on platform 1 at Manors will be out of service on Thursday 29 February from midday until 1.00pm. During the lift closure if you require step free access and wish to travel from Manors towards Byker, board a train from platform 2, to Monument change to platform 3 and board a train to continue your journey towards Byker. If you need step free access and want to leave the train at Manors platform 1, stay on the train to Byker, change platform and return to Manors platform 2.
