Metro’s modernisation programme is funded by the Government. By March 2024 a total of £446m will have been invested on the renewal of Metro infrastructure since work began in 2010

Metro infrastructure modernisation work 2010 to date:

35 Stations refurbished
65km of track renewed or refurbished
52 Switches and crossing renewed or refurbished
52 sets of points motors replaced
6.5km of track drainage installed
33km of cable troughing refurbished
85km of signalling cable replaced
62 bridges structurally repaired
3 bridges completely replaced or replaced
5 bridges removed in their entirety and infilled
27 escalators and 12 lifts replaced
A new rail tamping machine acquired
2km of earthworks repaired through ballast retention and stabilisation
65km of overhead line replaced
Replacement of help points, the public address system and 500 CCTV cameras
A new Radio System installed
A new Rail Traffic Management System (RTMS) installed

This is on top of the completion of the £104m Metro Flow project which saw three key sections of Metro line dualled.

Nexus has procured the delivery of a £362 million train fleet, with the support of the Government. Stadler, the Swiss train manufacturer, won the contract to design, build and maintain the new fleet. View the new Metro fleet here.

A replacement bus service number 900 will be running between Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends (via South Gosforth). Some late night buses to Four Lane Ends will continue to Benton and Manors, please check the timetable for details. Trains will be running elsewhere on the system but may not be to usual timetable. The lift on platform 1 will be out of service from 8.00am until midday and the lift on platform 2 will be out of service from midday until 4.00pm. Access between platform level and the ticket concourse will be possible by escalator and staircase only. If you require step free access to or from Gateshead station, please contact us on the station Help Point or call on 0191 20 20 747 (lines are open Monday - Friday, 9.00am-5.00pm). Step free access If you require step free access to platform 1 when the lift is out of use, please travel from platform 2 to Tyne Dock, change to platform 1 and continue your journey to South Shields. If you wish to leave the train at Chichester platform 1 and need step free access, stay on the train to South Shields and leave when it returns to Chichester platform 2. Your journey will take longer so please leave extra travelling time. Four day Major Line Closure 2024 Four day Major Line Closure Friday 29 March to Monday 1 April 2024 No trains between Heworth and South Gosforth Buses will replace trains between Heworth and South Gosforth in both directions for four days from Friday 29 March to Monday 1 April, while we renew track junctions in Metro tunnels under Newcastle city centre. Trains will be running frequently to all other stations but may not be to the usual timetable. During the four day line closure, no trains will stop at Monument platforms 3 or 4. Trains will run through the platforms without stopping. Any customers who would usually travel to or from Monument platform 3 or 4 should use Manors or St James station. Central Station will be fully closed during the work. The replacement bus service number 900, will run between Heworth and South Gosforth in both directions. The bus will continue from South Gosforth to Regent Centre to turn for the return trip. Some of the buses will begin/end service outside of the areas mentioned, please view the replacement bus timetable for details. Please plan your journey in advance and leave extra time for travel, as your journey will take longer. Train services between Heworth and South Gosforth will resume on Tuesday 2 April.
