Modernisation work:
No trains are running between Benton and Tynemouth all day today Saturday 5 and tomorrow Sunday 6 December. To allow for overhead line work. Replacement bus 900 is running between Four Lane Ends and Tynemouth. Some late night buses continue to Longbenton and to Monument via Wallsend, as they do not connect to the last train. Trains will run to all other stations but may not be to usual timetable. The train frequency between St James and Tynemouth will be a 20-30 minute service. Please check replacement bus and train times at nexus.org.uk before travelling. Your journey will take longer so leave extra travel time.

When we are running a good service the status will show as ‘No Metro disruptions’. Any delays (less than 15 minutes) to service will be announced via the station PA system and passenger information boards. If delays occur resulting in trains running more than 15 minutes later than advertised the status will be updated by an automatic travel alert system.

- No trains between Benton and Tynemouth

All day on Saturday 5 December no trains will run between Benton and Tynemouth in either direction to allow for overhead line work.  A replacement bus service, number 900 will be calling at or close to all stations from Four Lane Ends through to Tynemouth.

Some buses/trains do not connect therefore the last five buses to Four Lane Ends will continue to Longbenton, the bus that leaves Tynemouth at 11.04pm (towards Four Lane Ends) will continue to South Shields and the last three buses to Tynemouth from Four Lane Ends will continue to Monument (via Wallsend).  Metro tickets and passes will be accepted on the bus and tickets can be purchased from the driver (please try to have the correct change).

Trains will be running to all other areas but will not be to usual timetable. The train frequency between St James-Tynemouth and Benton-South Shields will be a 24/30 minute service. Trains to/from South Hylton will not run to an even frequency.

Some buses/trains do not connect therefore the bus that leaves Tynemouth at 10.59pm (towards Four Lane Ends) will continue to South Shields and the last three buses to Tynemouth from Four Lane Ends will continue to Monument (via Wallsend).  Metro tickets and passes will be accepted on the bus and tickets can be purchased from the driver (please try to have the correct change).

Trains will be running to all other areas but will not be the usual timetable. Trains will run to a 30 minute frequency throughout the day. Please note, some trains to Benton will wait at Four Lane Ends for four minutes before continuing into Benton station.

Train timetable on 5 and 6 December

On 5 and 6 December planned modernisation work is taking place between Benton and Tynemouth which impacts on some train times. Train times for key stations are below.  For more information on the planned modernisation work click here.  

Christmas Eve 

A weekday service will run until about 6.00pm, then an hourly service on each line (30 minute frequency between Pelaw and South Gosforth) until about 11.00pm.  Please note the times vary between each station.  Check train times before travelling.

Christmas Day

No Metro service running.

Boxing Day 

A Saturday service will run from about 8.00am until about 8.00pm. Please note the times vary between each station.  Check train times before travelling.

Sunderland station will be closed, trains will run through the station without stopping.

Sunday 27 December 

A normal weekday service will be running.

Monday 28 December

A weekday service will be operating without the additional peak trains.  Check train times before travelling.

Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 December service

A normal weekday service will operate.

New Year's Eve

A weekday service will run until about 10.00pm, then 30 minute service on each line (15 minute frequency between Pelaw and South Gosforth) until about 11.00pm.  Please note the times vary between each station.  Check train times before travelling.

Normal timetabled services resume.
