What is Tyne and Wear Metro?

The Tyne and Wear Metro is a public light rail rapid transport system which operates over and underground across Tyne and Wear.  Opened in 1980 and extended to Sunderland in 2002.

There are 60 stations on the network.  Serving Newcastle city centre, Sunderland city centre, Newcastle Airport and the seafronts at North and South Tyneside.

Tyne and Wear Metro is one of the most well-known and longest serving brands in the North East of England. The iconic yellow and black logo stands out on cubes at stations.

Metro are getting 46 new trains, which are being built by and will be maintained by Stadler.  The first of the new fleet are set for passenger service in 2024
