New Metro train

The delivery of 46 bespoke new Tyne and Wear Metro trains is the biggest project in our history. Offering high quality, comfort, reliability, security and accessibility, these trains will transform the customer experience.

The first new Metro train entered customer service on 18 December 2024.

Before each new train enters customer service we're putting them through thousands of detailed safety checks and tests to ensure they operate safely and seamlessly with our 60 Metro stations and 77km of track. Over the next two years you’ll continue to see our new trains out on the network being tested as they go through a process of kilometre accumulation which gives us the opportunity to stress test the overall reliability of the fleet. This complex and challenging part of the project will ensure the fleet is in the best possible position for entering customer service.
