Nexus has produced a handy guide to when public transport is operating in and around Tyne and Wear this Christmas and New Year.

Public transport including Metro, bus and Shields Ferry services will be running throughout the 2016 festive period, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Details here:
There are no Metro services in operation on Christmas Day, Sunday 25 December, and on New Year’s Day, Sunday 1 January.
On Christmas Eve, Saturday 24 December, there will be a normal weekday timetable with additional Metro services until about 6.30pm, when the trains will be half hourly through Newcastle city centre and hourly in all other areas until 11pm.
Boxing Day, Monday 26 December, will see Metro operating a Saturday timetable from 8am and 10.30pm. Note that Sunderland station, which is managed by Northern Rail, is closed on Boxing Day and passengers should use Park Lane instead.
On bank holiday Tuesday 27 December a Saturday timetable will be in operation.
From Wednesday 28 December until Friday 30 December Metro services will run to the usual weekday frequencies.
New Year’s Eve, Saturday 31 December, will see a normal Saturday service running until 10pm, then services every 30 mins (every 15 mins through Newcastle city centre) until about 11.15pm, when the last Metro services will leave Monument. (Last train times will vary depending on destination). There will be extra services between 6.30pm and 8pm.
There are no bus services in operation on Christmas Day and on New Year’s Day.
On Christmas Eve the main bus operators will have a normal timetable running until about 6.30pm, then a reduced service until 8pm, when all services will be finished.
On Boxing Day Arriva, Go North East and Stagecoach will run daytime services, with additional services paid for by Nexus. On bank holiday Tuesday, 27 December, the buses will run to a Saturday timetable.

On New Year’s Eve there will be normal timetables until 6.30pm, then reduced services until 8pm, when all bus services finish.
The bank holiday Monday, 2 January, will see Stagecoach operating Saturday timetables. All Go North East and Arriva services (except the 18/18A and the 32/32A which are Saturday timetables) will operate a Sunday service.
There are no Shields Ferry services on Christmas Day or on New Year’s Day.
On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve services will operate as usual but with an early finish. Last ferry from South Shields at 7.15pm and from North Shields at 7.30pm.
On Boxing Day the Ferry will operate a Sunday timetable.
Rail (Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland)
There are no Northern Rail services on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.
Northern Rail will operate normal services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve with a reduced timetable from 8pm on both respective days.
TravelShop opening hours
All Nexus TravelShops are closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, bank holiday Tuesday, 27 December, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, bank hopliday Monday 2 January.
The rest of the Christmas period will see normal TravelShop opening hours.
Customer Service Centre opening hours (0191 20 20 747)
The Nexus Customer Service Centre will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, bank holiday Tuesday 27 December, New Year’s Day and bank holiday Monday 2 January.
The opening hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are 8am-4pm.
Normal opening hours will be followed on all other days (7am-9pm) over the festive period.
