Extra public transport services for the Sunderland Airshow 2010

Extra public transport services including buses and Metro and a park and ride facility will be in operation for the Sunderland Airshow on Saturday July 24 and Sunday July 25.

Anyone travelling to the Airshow on public transport can obtain further details by logging on to www.nexus.org.uk or by calling Traveline on 0871 200 2233.

The extra Metro trains will be running on both days between Sunderland and Newcastle city centres and Seaburn station. The seafront is only a ten minute walk from Seaburn station. Extra staff will be on duty to provide passengers with assistance.

Bus operators Stagecoach and Go North East will be operating special Airshow services. Further information on these can be found at www.stagecoachbus.com and www.simplygo.com.

Nexus will be running park-and-ride buses from Fulwell Quarry and Downhill Sports Complex on both days of the Airshow. Parking costs £5 per car with bus travel free.

Buses run from 9am until 7pm on both Saturday and Sunday, every ten minutes. Service 1 will be for the Downhill Sports Complex and service 2 for Fulwell Quarry.

The car parks will be well signposted from major routes into Sunderland and supervised throughout the day. There will be no access to car parks after 7pm.

Director General of Nexus, Bernard Garner, said: “Public transport has a key role to play during the Sunderland Airshow. Thousands of people use Metro and bus services to get down to the Roker sea front and we don’t expect this year to be any different.”

By Metro:

Extra trains will be running on both days between Sunderland and Newcastle city centres and Seaburn station. The seafront is only 10 minutes walk, you won’t get stuck in traffic jams and extra staff will be on hand to look after you on your journey.

By Bus – special Airshow services:

510 (Stagecoach) every few minutes between Sunderland City Centre (Wilkinsons in Fawcett Street), Wheatsheaf, Stadium of Light Metro, Seaburn Metro and Sunderland Airshow (Recreation Ground)

A1 (Go North East) every 15 minutes Park Lane and Fawcett Street to Seaburn.

A2 (Go North East) every 20 minutes Galleries, Concord, Sulgrave, Hylton Castle. Southwick, Fulwell, Seaburn

A3 (Go North East) every 30 minutes, Peterlee, Easington, Hetton, Houghton, Herrington and via Sunderland to Seaburn

99 (Go North East) will be running special Saturday and Sunday services on Airshow weekend between Hylton Castle, Southwick and Seaburn.

Services E1, E2 and E6 (Stagecoach) link South Shields and Sunderland City Centre with the Airshow site

Service 18 and 19 (Stagecoach) run to Seaburn from most parts of Sunderland (minor diversions in the Seaburn area and does not serve South Bents).

By Park and Ride:

Northern will be running a normal service, with regular trains from the Tees Valley, Tyne Valley and Carlisle. Change at Sunderland station for shuttle buses (above) to the Airshow site or Metro to Seaburn.

Grand Central will be running a normal service with trains from Tees Valley stations, York and London. Change at Sunderland station for shuttle buses (above) to the Airshow site or Metro to Seaburn.
