Tynemouth Station is to receive a £2m Government grant for essential conservation work.

The station, a Grade II listed structure which was first opened in 1882 by the North Eastern Railway, will have its historic roof canopies repaired. The funding will also be used to enhance the existing exhibition space.

Tynemouth Station has been part of the Metro network since the system first opened in 1981.
