Young apprentice Lucy Frost is aiming high in business, thanks to a new initiative from Go Smarter Ways into Work.
Lucy, 18, from Heaton in Newcastle, has been able to access a Business Administration Level 2 Apprenticeship at Barnado’s Palmersville Training, thanks to a partnership between sustainable transport programme, Go Smarter, and Nexus.
Go Smarter is the behaviour change programme for the North East that encourages everyone to use sustainable transport – like walking, cycling and using public transport – on their daily journeys to work and school, and the new Ways into Work side of the programme has been making a big impact.
Together with key partner, Nexus, Go Smarter has been able to provide specially branded POP Cards to organisations, to help enable young people and adults who may have difficulty accessing transport, to travel to education, training and employment.
Lucy, who began her apprenticeship earlier this year, said: ‘Thanks to the new Go Smarter Ways into Work programme, I have been able to afford to travel from my home in Newcastle to Palmersville Training in North Tyneside, in order to do my apprenticeship.
‘’My previous experience with work was not very successful or enjoyable, but the Pop card has enabled me to pursue my ambitions in business’’.
Christina Saunders-Wingfield, Children Service Manager at Palmersville Training, said ‘’This new scheme has allowed many local young people to travel to take part in our education and training offering – giving them opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available to them’’.
‘’Not many people know that Barnardo’s offers a range of vocational courses, like Painting and Decorating, and Beauty courses, and all of our qualifications have work experience attached. But not all young people can access this, because the cost of travel can ordinarily be quite high’’.
Emma Allan, Programme Support Officer for Go Smarter, said ‘’Our new Go Smarter Ways into Work initiative has allowed us to work with organisations like Barnardo’s, in order to give more people new opportunities in life.
‘’We are delighted that the POP cards we have provided to Barnado’s have been invaluable in allowing Lisa, and other young people just like her, the chance to travel affordably – allowing them to benefit from a fantastic education which will hopefully lead onto successful working careers’’.
