Nexus is providing a new local taxi-bus service linking parts of Whickham to Metrocentre from Monday, 14 June.
The TB43 goes from Whickham’s Watergate Estate via Broom Lane, Front Street, Coniston Avenue and Lambton Avenue to Metrocentre bus station.
It will run every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday between about 9.30am and 6.00pm, and is being introduced to coincide with the withdrawal of Go North East service 143 from the same area.
Tobyn Hughes, Director of Strategy for Nexus, said: “Taxi-buses are ideal for meeting areas of small but acute demand for public transport – in this case a number of neighbourhoods which need direct links to shops, services and other public transport.”
A taxi-bus is a conventional bus service provided using a large taxi, which saves on cost and environmental impact while still being big enough for the number of passengers expected to travel on each journey.
Passengers pay a standard bus fare and concessionary passes for pensioners, disabled customers and people under 16 apply. Go North East only tickets such as Buzz Fares are not valid on this service, but Network One passes are.
Away from Metrocentre on roads without bus stops service TB43 will stop on request so long as it is safe to do so.
The TB43 is one of 12 taxi-bus routes paid for by Nexus in different parts of Tyne and Wear linking smaller communities to local services.
