Nexus is spending £130,000 on a facelift for Wallsend bus station, with new shelters, improved lighting, extra CCTV and changes to the road layout to improve circulation.
Work has already begun on the project which will be completed over the next two months at the bus station beside Wallsend Metro.
The work forms part of the Nexus Bus Strategy, a three-year action plan to improve bus services not just in North Tyneside but across Tyne and Wear.
It follows a similar £100,000 facelift for Blaydon bus station in Gateshead completed this summer. South Shields bus station is also in line for improvement work.
Tobyn Hughes, Nexus Director of Strategy, said: “We are creating a brighter and better bus station for Wallsend, in response to requests from passengers who use the facility.
“Better lighting and CCTV along with new shelters meets our Bus Strategy aim to make passengers feel safer ad more comfortable when waiting for a bus.”
The work at Wallsend will see three new CCTV cameras installed alongside those already sited at the bus and Metro stations. Further cameras will be installed inside new shelters at the bus station at a later date.
New bus shelters with energy-efficient LED lighting will replace the existing shelters, along with new fencing along kerbs. The central traffic island will also be removed to make it easier for buses using the station.
Nexus has planned the work to keep disruption to passengers to a minimum.
The interchange will stay open throughout with buses calling at alternative stands while work takes place. Details will be displayed on posters.
