A new Pop card has been launched to give more young people discounted travel on the Tyne and Wear Metro.
Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, has introduced a Pay As You Go product for 19 to 21-year-olds, providing them with 30% off every journey they make.
The Pop19-21 card is aimed at students and all young people in that age bracket, who said they wanted greater value and flexibility when they were consulted by Nexus on their travel needs before lockdown.
The launch of Pop 19-21 means Metro now offers free travel or smart card discounts for every age group up to 21, following the launch earlier this summer of free travel for children aged 11 and under with a fare-paying adult, alongside cheaper fares for older children and teenagers.
Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “We now offer free travel or great value smart card discounts on Metro from birth into your twenties.
“We want young people to grow up with Metro as the clean, green way to travel for the rest of their lives and we have made it cheap and easy to do that. Children travel free with an adult until they are 11, young people pay no more than £1 until they are 18, and now benefit from a new 30% discount right up to age 21.
“We are always looking to provide the best possible value for our customers and this delivers that for many thousands of young people who live in Tyne and Wear and who use the Metro to get around.
“We spoke extensively to students and young people before the pandemic about what kind of products made them more likely to travel on public transport.
“They said that they wanted value and flexibility, and the Pop 19-21 card offers that to them. They can benefit from a 30% discount on every Metro journey they make.
“The introduction of this product coincides with universities and colleges returning and is ideal for anyone returning to higher education this month.
“This builds on our already hugely popular take the kids for free offer as we seek to ensure that people right across the communities we serve have access to affordable travel.”
The 30% discount provided by Pop 19-21 means a reduction in an all zone daily ticket on a normal adult pay as you go card from £4.85 to £3.40.
Nexus already offers discounted Pay As You Go travel for 16-19 year-old through its Pop blue card, which was launched in 2018 and has allowed young people to make 1.2 million journeys for £1,
The launch of Pop 19-21 comes hot on the heels of the Take the Kids For Free offer, which was recently made permanent and allows children under 11 to travel for free on Metro when they are with a parent or guardian.
