Shields Ferry passengers can enjoy some musical nostalgia this summer as another busy programme of river cruises returns to the Tyne.

Nexus, which operates the Shields Ferry service, will this year be running special Sing-a-long-the-Tyne trips, giving passengers the chance to request some of their all-time favourite songs.

Singer Carol Lee will be on hand to belt out the requests as well as some of her own favourites from Shirley Bassey, Neil Diamond and Susan Boyle.

The musical themed river trips are a new feature for 2013 along with a disco party cruise for children and their parents.

And back by popular demand for a third year running are the Ferry’s Fish and Chip trips.

Nexus will also still be operating its usual programme one and a half hour Tyne Tours and the three-hour Sunday Afternoon River Trips, which give people the chance to take in the sights of the River Tyne with an informative historical commentary available on the longer Tyne trips.

Other trips to cater for family fun include children’s entertainers, an animal encounters trip, where children can get the chance to pet cute and friendly animals, all while on board the ferry, and a pirate themed trip which is also for children.

All of the summer ferry cruises depart from the South Shields Ferry landing.

Shields Ferry Manager, Carol Timlin, said: “We have added some extra river trips this summer and the musical nostalgia will really appeal to our passengers.

“We also have our standard river cruises, with historical commentary, the fish and chip trips, and there are plenty of family fun events to keep the children entertained. There’s something for everyone.”

Nexus is running a competition to win tickets for its summer river trips, passengers should visit the Ferry’s Facebook page to find out more, click here
