Grab a stottie via Metro

Posted: 08 Feb 2024

We’re celebrating all things stottie cake this week, a North East culinary tradition

Stotties are a form of breadcake and have a heavy dough-like texture. It's only allowed to prove once, rather than the usual twice for tin loafs. This tends to make it very filling food, perfect for manual labour in the shipyards and industry of the past. These days the most popular filling is ham and pease pudding, but you can enjoy any filling you want. Follow our list below of several places to visit for your tasty doughy treat in celebration of the humble stottie.

Big  River Bakery- Shieldfield

Leading Stottie Cake Week is the Big River Bakery, a company dedicated to delivery bread and social value, with giving people from all backgrounds opportunities to learn and work, it’s a great social enterprise. Located in between Manors and Byker Metro stations,  close to the Northumbria University Business school it’s a nice walk from town or a great starting point to explore the Ouseburn.

Pink Lane Bakery – Newcastle/ South Gosforth

Located on Westgate Road, close to Central Station and on South Gosforth High Street, it’s a great local bakery, with all sorts of offerings, including focaccia and sourdough, and of course, great stotties.

Juliet's – Seaburn

A traditional family business located close to Seaburn Metro station, on Sea Road. With plenty of stotties for sale, plus ready-made pies, cakes and quiche, it’s a great place no matter what you’re in the mood for. But get down quick as they often sell out!

Greggs- South Shields Interchange

We couldn’t make a list of places to buy stotties without including North East institution Greggs, a major UK brand with over 2000 stores across the UK. With over 33 Greggs in and around Metro stations it was hard to choose one, but we picked South Shields. A new interchange opened in 2019 with a large Greggs cafe, perfect for stocking up on everything from scones and pasties to the famous stotties. Greggs also do half stotties with a variety of fillings.   Top tip: download the Greggs app to get free treats!

Happy Stottie Week!
