    For award-winning ice cream look no further than Di Meos. Their homemade Gelato is freshly made buy hand every day following a secret family recipe which dates back to 1925 and has been mastered through four generations. Like their ancestors, they continue to use only the finest ingredients and the creamiest milk which has been sourced from local dairy farms. Whatever flavour you like there are plenty to choose from. Di Meo's have locations in Whitley Bay, Ouseburn and Tynemouth

  2. Mimi's ice cream factory

 Mimi's is a colourful and vibrant place with lots of Instagram potential. On a daily basis, Mimi's aims to have between 26 and 28 different flavours on offer, along with 14 different topping and sauce combinations and there are always at least 7 different vegan options available. Customers can also choose to have a sugar cone or tub, along with a Mimi's branded wafer. The factory theme has staff wearing lab-coats and these flavour experts are on hand to help customers with any of their ice-cream or sorbet combinations.

3. Mark Toney's

This family run ice-cream shop is the heart of the North East. The business still hand-make their gold medal award winning dairy ice-creams in Benton, based on the family recipe from Italy over 120 years ago. There is ice-cream shops on Percy Street and Grainger Street with warm and inviting service.

4. Scoop and Bean 

Housed on South Shields sea-front, Scoop and Bean is an Ice-cream café with a cool modern interior that has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have over 30 different flavours that change seasonally. A very reasonably priced spot and you can get topping like sprinkles and chocolate flakes.

5. Tutti Frutti 

Take a stroll down the beach from Seaburn Metro station to Whitburn village and you will find this hidden gem. Tutti Frutti is a family friendly American 50s style ice-cream parlour in the heart of Whitburn village, offering a variety of tasty treats in both sweet and savoury form. The Tutti Frutti speciality is their ice-cream sundaes! A favourite is one called 'Teddy Bear' which is bubble-gum and strawberry ice-cream, gummy bears, popping candy and strawberry sauce.
