Consultation on proposed changes to service 787

19 November 2025

Overview of the Proposal

Most bus services in Tyne & Wear are run commercially by private bus companies.  Services which are not profitable, but which still serve an important social need are then paid for by Nexus.  We regularly review all the local bus services that we pay for to ensure that they continue to provide value for money and meet the needs of the communities they serve.

Service 787 was introduced in March 2024.  The route and timetable were designed to improve public transport access between Newcastle city centre and the Airport during the early hours before Metro services have started for the day.  The new service has been well received, opening employment opportunities at Newcastle Airport for residents who do not have access to their own transportation, providing improved public transport connections with early morning train departures from Central Station as well as serving staff returning home after working in Newcastle’s night-time economy.

Following a recent performance review, we are proposing the following changes to service 787:

  • Route extended to additionally serve Byker, Walker and Wallsend

The route would be extended east of Newcastle to provide late night and early morning public transport access for residents in Byker, Walker and Wallsend.

  • Revised timetable and frequency

Service 787 would continue to operate during the early hours of each morning, but the frequency would be reduced to hourly.  Reducing the frequency would allow us to extend the route to other areas – allowing more residents access to early morning public transport.

Service 787 Consultation Update – March 2026

Following public consultation, we confirm that we will proceed with planned changes to Service 787.

What’s changing?

• New hourly timetable, route, and fares will be introduced from 22 March 2026.

• The route will be extended to additionally serve Byker, Walker and Wallsend, providing these areas with early morning access to/from Newcastle city centre or Newcastle Airport.

• Revised city centre stopping locations will be introduced with buses now serving Blackett Street.

• Service 787 will be operated on behalf of Nexus by Go North East.

• Stagecoach tickets/passes will be valid for first four weeks (up until and including Sunday 19 April), allowing customers to transition to new arrangements.
