Planned changes to Nexus funded service 317

4 July 2022

What were we consulting about?

Planned changes to Nexus funded service 317 in North Tyneside.

Why were we considering changes to these services?

Our new 317 service was introduced in March 2022, linking Wallsend – Howdon – North Shields – Whitley Bay.  In recent months, customers and stakeholders have contacted us asking if the route and stops in Wallsend could be amended to provide better access to local shops and facilities.

What changes were we proposing?

We are proposing to amend the route of service 317 in Wallsend to instead operate a new one-way loop via High Street East, Station Road, Elton Street East, Elton Street West, West Street and High Street West.  Bus stops at Wallsend Forum/Station Road, Elton Street/ALDI, High Street West/Duke of York and High Street West/Barclays Bank would be served instead of the current terminus at Wallsend Interchange.

A new timetable would be introduced.  Trips would continue to operate up to every 30 minutes throughout each day.  A small number of late evening trips would be curtailed due to low levels of demand.  Buses serving North Shields Ferry Landing would be scheduled to wait a few extra minutes to help provide more reliable connections between bus and the Shields Ferry.

How would customers/residents be affected by these changes?

If the proposed changes are taken forward, then customers would get improved access to local shops and facilities in Wallsend Town Centre.  New stops served on Station Road, Elton Street and High Street West are in closer proximity to the Forum Shopping Centre and ALDI.  The bus stop at Wallsend Interchange would no longer be served, but customers wishing to connect with Metro or other bus services would be able to use the new stops in the Town Centre, or alternatively connect with Metro at Howdon where bus stops served by the 317 are located on Howdon Lane adjacent to the Metro station.

Additional waiting time at North Shields Ferry Landing will help provide more reliable connections between bus and the Shields Ferry.

The daily 2255 trip from Wallsend will now terminate at North Shields Town Centre (instead of Whitley Bay) and the daily 2325 trip from Wallsend will now terminate at Percy Main (instead of North Shields Town Centre).  Customers affected by these changes may be required to travel on earlier departures.

Your views?
This consultation was open from Monday 4 July – Friday 22 July 2022. All feedback received before Friday 22 July 2022 was taken into consideration.

During the consultation Nexus staff travelled on the service to speak with customers about our plans. 75% of customers we spoke with preferred for the route to serve the Forum Shopping Centre, 10% preferred the existing route to/from Wallsend Interchange and 15% had no preference.

We have therefore decided to progress our planned changes and a new timetable/route for service 317 will be introduced with effect from Sunday 4 September 2022.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to provide us with their views and help shape the future of this service.
