Planned changes to Nexus funded services 33/33a

7 December 2021

What are we consulting about?

Planned changes to Nexus funded trips on services 33/33a in Newcastle.

Why are we considering changes to these services?

As we emerge from the pandemic, travel patterns have changed.  We recently completed a review of the services we fund in Newcastle to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of communities and provide good value for money.  This review identified opportunities to improve bus links to/from Shieldfield and University of Northumbria City Campus.

What changes are we proposing?

  • Route of services 33/33a between Jesmond – City Centre revised to serve Shieldfield and University of Northumbria City Campus

How would customers/residents be affected by these changes?

  • New direct bus link (every 30 minutes, Monday – Saturday daytime & hourly evening/Sunday) between University of Northumbria City Campus/Shieldfield – Jesmond/Gosforth
  • Daily evening and Sunday daytime trips on Shield Street/Simpson Terrace in Shieldfield (this road is not currently served by buses during evening/Sunday hours – please also note related consultation for service 32a)
  • Revised city centre bus stop locations with buses departing from Market Street East (opposite the Law Courts) instead of Pilgrim Street
  • Bus stops on Pilgrim Street, John Dobson Street & Sandyford Road no longer served by services 33/33a
  • Revised timetable introduced to reduce amount of time buses are parked in city centre (but frequency un-changed)
