Changes to service

Strike action Friday 20 and Saturday 21 December

The RMT union has informed Nexus of strike action by train crew on the Tyne and Wear Metro on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 December.  In the event of strike action no Metro service will be running system-wide for the two full days and passengers will need to find alternative modes of transport.

Industrial action

Metro services are already being affected by an overtime ban among train crew. Here’s the information you need to plan your journey during this industrial action by RMT union. 

We’ve written some frequently asked questions (download available at the bottom of this page) to give you more details and to explain why industrial action is taking place.

• There may be less frequent Metro services and busier trains on some days, but Metro will still be running to all destinations.

• We aim to protect services in the peak ‘rush hour’ periods, when passengers rely on them most, as much as possible.

• You may have to wait longer for the next train, so please leave extra time for your journey.

• There may be occasions when trains are cancelled at short notice.

• Each day’s Metro service level will be graded during the industrial action:

Green: Fair service. Some trains maybe cancelled.

Amber: Gaps in service. Trains will be busier. If possible travel outside peak periods.

Red: Poor service. Trains will be very busy with gaps between services.
