Whitley Bay Metro station canopy refurbishment project
The Grade II listed structure is undergoing a major programme of restoration work, which began in July 2023 and will continue until Spring 2025. The restoration work will focus on the canopy and the steelworks.
Work includes:
- Strengthening and painting of steelworks
- Replacing glazing with a more robust modern alternative
- Restoring the glazing directly above the tracks
We aim to keep disruption including noise to a minimum during the projects.
During the work the businesses within the station (The Ticket Office cafe/bar, Yoga Studio and Dil and the Bear cafe/bar) will remain open as usual.

Changes to station facilities
To support the canopy refurbishment work, a scaffolding rig has been installed which will alter the appearance of the station and some areas are fenced off.
Access to the station and to platforms is still possible. When waiting for a train, please use the full length of the platform.
The cycle locker storage units within the station have been removed and will return once the project is completed.
The car park will be closed from 3 July 2023 until Spring 2025 as the area is being used as a works compound. Alternative parking is available at Cullercoats and Tynemouth (charges apply). Full list of alternative car parking facilities.
The station toilets are open each day from 8.00am until 5.00pm (fully closed from Monday 8 April until Monday 15 April).
Nexus have contracted Kier to undertake the works at Whitley Bay.
