Pay As You Go on Metro
You can travel as many times as you like in one day. You are charged each time you travel until you reach the daily price cap for the number of zones you’ve travelled in. You’ll never pay more than the daily price cap for the number of zones you’ve travelled in.
From 15 December 2024 you can travel on the Northumberland Line with your Pay As You Go card (A+B+C+D zones).
Important information for Pop PAYG customers from 15 December 2024
If you touch in at the start of your journey, but don't touch out at the end to close your journey, you're automatically charged the maximum fare. From 15 December, the maximum fare will increase to include Zone D:

If you make 3 zone journeys, and sometimes don’t touch out, because you think we’ll deduct the correct fare anyway – this will no longer be the case.
Make sure that you touch out at the end of your journey so that you pay the correct amount for the journey you have made.
The price depends on the number of zones you travel in.

How to buy
You can get your Pop PAYG card online. The card itself is free, but must be purchased with a £5 balance..
Once you have your Pop PAYG card you can top it up:
- Online
- At any Metro station ticket machine
You can top your Pop PAYG card up to a maximum balance of £90.
Or, you can use Pop PAYG on your Android smartphone with Google Pay, and use it on Metro in the same way that you'd use a Pop PAYG smartcard. Please note that Pop PAYG on Android can only be used on Metro.
