Children travelling by Metro during the school summer holidays will be able to go on a journey of literary discovery, thanks to a new series of posters.

Travelling Tales is a collection of specially designed prints on display at five stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro system. The posters were created by children and staff from the Riverside Learning Trust in Newcastle to encourage children to enjoy reading during their school holidays.

The five individually designed posters, which are placed at Metro stations between Walkergate and Monument, feature short stories written by pupils from schools across the trust. The eye-catching displays also include photos, trivia and tips to encourage young people to keep reading throughout the summer.

Sarah Stock, Assistant Head Teacher, Walkergate Primary School, said: “The Trust is a collaboration of schools across the East End of Newcastle and one of our priorities is to promote reading and the benefits of reading quality texts across to the wider community.

“The Travelling Tales posters are just one way we’re doing that and we want parents and children to appreciate how much fun can be found in books, and encourage everyone to explore some of the many paths you can take through reading.”

The project is supported by Newcastle Libraries who are holding a Summer Reading Challenge, a national scheme to encourage primary aged children to read six books of their choice during the summer holidays.

Sarah added: “We’d love as many children as possible to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge, and hopefully the posters will inspire people to join in. We’re really excited to see the posters up on the Metro system and hope people from across the region take a moment to consider the message.

“Schools in the Trust have shared details of work from class books they’ve read so I’m sure all the children will be delighted to see their work in print for thousands of people to see.”

Emma Brough, Customer Services Director at DB Regio Tyne and Wear, which operates the Metro on behalf of Nexus, said: “The Travelling Tales poster series is a welcome addition to the stations and platforms on Metro. We’re happy to be working with the Riverside Learning Trust who’ve done a fabulous job creating such fun and engaging posters.”

Travelling Tales will be on display at Walkergate, Chillingham Road, Byker, Manors and Monument Metro stations throughout the school summer holidays.
