Nexus, which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, is encouraging Metro season ticket holders to pay for their travel using a new online click and collect service.

Metro’s 25,000 season ticket holders can pay online and then collect their MetroSavers by touching in with their Pop card at any Metro station validator or ticket machine.

After registering their Pop card, customers can manage their account from any internet-connected device, such as smart phones or tablets. As well as paying for travel, customers can check the expiry of their ticket, report their card if it is lost or stolen and update any changes to their personal information.

Weekly, four-weekly and annual MetroSavers are all available via click and collect. Buying online offers customers an easier and more convenient way to pay for a ticket up to seven days in advance.

Director of Finance and Resources at Nexus, John Fenwick, said: “Our click and collect service for Metro season ticket holders is a welcome addition to the way in which our customers can purchase our products.

“Customers can now register Pop cards online and set up an account so that they can pay for their travel any time that they like.

“Each pre-paid product is uploaded automatically when customers validate their Pop card at station validators or ticket machines after the online payment has been made.”

Promotional staff will be on duty at Metro stations to show Metro customers how to use the click and collect service and provide them with information about how to save time by applying for a Pop card.

Nexus launched the ‘click and collect’ service to make it even easier for passengers to access the system.

The Pop Shop allows anyone with a Pop card to buy and renew Metro season tickets online at the touch of a button.

All they need to do is register their existing Pop card online and select the required product.

First time customers can also apply for Pop card from the same website, which is also accessible through portal on the Nexus home page.

Customers who apply for a Pop card online or from any Nexus TravelShop will receive it within five working days.

The Pop card was launched by Nexus in 2011.

Metro passengers have made almost three million journeys using smart cards since the start of April.

Nexus has invested in new smart ticket machines and validators at all 60 Metro stations, along with gate lines at some key stations as part of the £389m Metro all change modernisation programme.
