Emergency shuttle bus for Newburn

28 September 2012

An emergency shuttle bus for the Newburn area is running to help people left without public transport in the area.

The bus, provided by Nexus, will run every 20 minutes from 7am until 8pm between Newburn village and Throckley, allowing residents of Newburn to reach the local supermarket, other local services, and to change onto buses for other parts of Newcastle.

Sainsbury, the local supermarket, is also providing a bus directly between the store in Throckley and Newburn (by Lloyds TSB) which will run every 30 minutes between 11am and 2pm on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday only.

Nexus has worked closely with Newcastle City Council to make sure a bus is in place, as normal bus routes have been diverted by the closure of Newburn High Street, affected by flood damage earlier this week.

The bus will be free to use and call at all stops on a route from Throckley Sainsbury’s via Newburn Road, Station Road (east), Station Road (west), Newburn Road, Hallow Drive, Leazes Parkway, Coach Road, Hexham Road and Newburn Road before returning to Throckley Sainsbury’s.

The bus is being provided by Stagecoach under a contract with Nexus and will be reviewed as the full extent of damage to the local road becomes clearer in the coming week.

The bus replaces the normal 13, 22 and 71 bus routes. These are unable to serve Newburn village and are being diverted through Walbottle and along Hexham Road (in both directions).

The timetable for the emergency service which will start tomorrow (Saturday 29 September 2012) is attached.
