A special offer on free car parking at Metro park and ride sites has been extended until the end of November.

Nexus, which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, has extended the special offer as a goodwill gesture to passengers after a busy year of modernisation work that has meant disruption on the network.

Metro car parks at Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Regent Centre, Four Lane Ends, Northumberland Park and the Stadium of Light, which normally charge £1.60 a day, were made free from 18 July – along with most smaller car parks which are already free.

The offer will now run until November 30 before Nexus unveils a new pricing structure for parking at Metro station car parks.

Since the free parking was introduced in mid July there have been an increased number of Metro journeys from park and ride sites.

An extra 1,500 parking spaces at Metro park-and-ride stations have been made free as part of the offer.

Director of Customer Services for Nexus, Tobyn Hughes, said: “We’ve extended the offer on free parking as a way of thanking passengers for all the disruption caused by our £385m Metro all change modernisation programme.

“There has been a significant amount of planned Metro line closures this year, with weekend works and a 23-day major line closure. The free park and ride offer is a way of saying thank you to our customers. The offer will now run until the end of November.”

The Kingston Park Metro station park-and-ride, which is owned by Newcastle City Council, is free on Sundays.

Felling and Heworth in Gateshead are not part of the free parking offer, and normal charges will apply at these locations.
