Local bus links in West Newcastle

Nexus staff talking to local resident
21 May 2012

Nexus has completed a consultation with local residents on plans it believes will improve local bus services in West Newcastle.

The plans are aimed at providing faster and more direct link from Walbottle, Newburn and Throckley to West Denton Shops, as well as a new direct link from Blucher Village.

They will also restore direct links to Newcastle City Centre and the RVI from parts of Benwell, Scotswood and East Denton previously served by route 50.

A consuiltation during June attracted almost 80 responses including local councillors, community groups and residents.  Nexus is now considering a number of suggestions made for changes to its plans, and will provide feedback to everyone who took part.

The planned changes affect existing services 4 and 13 – two of the routes that Nexus provides in Tyne and Wear using funds from local councils because commercial buses don’t fully meet local needs.

Nexus Community Relations Officer Andrew McGuinness said: “All local bus services arranged and paid for by Nexus are reviewed on a regular basis to make sure they continue to provide good value for money and meet the needs of local people."

"It is clear from the consultation how much people value the local bus links Nexus provides to shops, amenities, employment sites and health services."

Nexus will provide a summary of the final recommendations through this website and to councillors prior to any changes being implemented during early September 2012.

The proposed changes will not cost the taxpayer any more in public subsidy, but Nexus believes most passengers would benefit from faster journey times and new direct links to key destinations.
