The Tyne and Wear Metro’s iconic yellow livery is a striking new feature of a £14m redevelopment of the departure lounge at Newcastle International Airport.

The new-look departure lounge has a range of new shops, cafes, restaurants and bar areas – and one of the designs has been inspired by Metro’s logo.

Bar 11, which forms part of the revamp, is a pub that celebrates regional icons, with Metro’s distinctive yellow brand making a welcome appearance.

Nexus, which owns and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, is delighted that its colour scheme has found pride of place at the airport.

Managing Director of Nexus, Tobyn Hughes, said: “It’s great that the Metro brand has been featured in the exciting redevelopment of the departure lounge at Newcastle Airport.

“The iconic Metro logo and system map are instantly recognisable. Metro has become a massive part of everyday life for the people of Tyne and Wear over the last 35 years.

“We brought Metro services to Newcastle International in 1991 and it’s something we’re really proud of. It remains one of the fastest airport to city centre transfers in the country.”

Designed to provide a more straightforward journey for customers with a modern and vibrant feel, the £14million development has seen the entire departure lounge transformed in 2015 with a range of new shops, cafes, restaurants and bar areas.

Highlights include a new walk-through World Duty Free store and new food and beverage outlets; The Cabin, Bar11 and Caffe Ritazza. The Xpress Podshop, a self-service shopping outlet has been added, while existing brands WHSmith, Boots, Travelex, Accessorize and Traveller have moved into new stores.

The new-look departure lounge at Newcastle Airport was officially opened on Monday 14 December by the Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill MP.
