Whitley Bay Metro station is the backdrop for a popular Sunday market which has been hailed as a success story for the town following its introduction three years ago.

Organisers of the Green Beans Community Market say the event has gone from strength to strength after it initially started out as an 18 month pilot project.

The market takes place on the last Sunday of every month in the concourse at Whitley Bay Metro Station, on Station Road, and continues to attract an eclectic mix of budding entrepreneurs.

Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, has provided the space for the market, within the Metro station.

But it is organised by a group of local volunteers whose primary objective is to focus on the environment, with home-grown produce, healthy food, gardening and upcycling of various items all on sale. The proceeds go back into local community projects.

Steve Taplin, Chair of the Market Group, said: “We like to think that this once a month Sunday community market is helping to bring people of all ages together in the town and giving visitors using the Metro a good first impression of Whitley Bay.

“Hopefully, it will encourage people to keep coming back to enjoy everything that Whitley Bay has to offer.  It is still early days, but with the help of our growing band of loyal local stallholders the market is also starting to contribute to the town’s economy.”

Metro Services Director, Chris Carson, said: “We have worked with Whitley Bay Green Beans market organisers to carefully develop it into a credible and recognised event for the locality. Metro stations are a great gateway for many local towns in the region.

“The market organisers have worked hard to get this far and the event brings something unique to Whitley Bay which Metro passengers can easily visit and support every month.  It is also great to hear how it has inspired people to set up their own businesses.

“This community market is an excellent family friendly event which is enhanced by the existing Coffee Central café and Olives at the Station restaurant and is a great day out for everyone.”

The next Whitley Bay Green Beans Market will be held on Sunday 29 April, 10am-3pm. If anyone is interested in having a stall at the event please talk to one of the organisers at the information desk at the market or contact Steve Taplin by email: greenbeansmarket@gmail.com.
