Metro services have resumed between South Gosforth and Shiremoor following a 34 day Major Line Closure.

The first trains operated through the affected area as planned from the start of timetabled Metro services this morning, Sunday 3 September.

The re-opening comes after a 34 day major line closure which has seen a £20m programme of modernisation work carried out.

The end of the work marks the completion of track renewal work on Metro’s North Tyne coastal loop.

Director of Rail and Infrastructure at Nexus, Raymond Johnstone, said: “I thank our customers for their patience during this period of planned disruption.

“I am pleased to confirm that the Metro line between South Gosforth and Shiremoor is back open to Metro services on the target date that we set.

“We have packed an enormous amount of work into the last 34 days, replacing six kilometres of track and installing an entirely new Metro bridge at Killingworth Road.

“This has been the most intensive summer of investment in Metro’s history. The work will ensure we have a Metro system for many decades to come.

“The tracks and other infrastructure in this area were old and they had to be replaced. The bridge that we replaced dated back to the Victorian era.”

A road improvement scheme by Newcastle City Council, which will see Killingworth Road widened towards the Haddricks Mill roundabouts has been arranged to dovetail with the Metro modernisation schemes. The road scheme will mean the road will closed until the Spring of 2018.

The local road improvements and the replacement of Killingworth Road bridge are being funded by the Government’s Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund, which the City Council and Nexus jointly bid for.
