TV presenter Michael Portillo has taken a trip on the Tyne and Wear Metro and the Shields Ferry for his latest series of Great British Railway Journeys.
Portillo, who has become renowned for his railway travel programmes on the BBC, took two journeys on the Metro and a Tyne crossing on the ferry from North Shields to South Shields.
He was given permission to film in the ferry’s wheelhouse with crew members Nathan Williamson and David Kirkhouse.
His two trips on the Metro saw him travel from Central Station in Newcastle to Tynemouth on Friday 20 August, and from South Shields back to Newcastle on Saturday 21 August.
Nexus Communications Officer, David Punton, said: "We were delighted to welcome the TV presenter Michael Portillo for two days of filming on Metro and the cross-Tyne Shields Ferry.
“The filming was for a new series that is coming out in the spring of 2022.
“Mr Portillo and his film crew travelled extensively on Metro and did a crossing on the Shields Ferry from North Shields over to South Shields. He had a chance to meet some of our employees and the ferry crew took part in some of the filming in the wheelhouse on board Spirit of the Tyne.
“We’re really looking forward to seeing the completed programme on television next year.”
It is the third time Portillo has filmed on the Tyne and Wear Metro for Great British Railway Journeys, following on from visits in 2010 and 2019.
The new series is due to be broadcast in the Spring of 2022.
