Nexus is consulting on possible changes to a bus service it provides in North Tyneside.

It wants to hear local views on whether the route of the 59 should be altered following recent changes to commercial services in the area.

Residents and councillors in West Allotment and the Marden Estate had asked Nexus to see if direct links to North Tyneside Hospital could be restored.

It has responded to these requests from the community by proposing three options, which are being set out at community meetings and which can be viewed at the website nexus.org.uk.

There are maps of the route options and a short questionnaire for people to take part in. You can view the survey by clicking here.

Tobyn Hughes, Deputy Director General of Nexus said: “West Allotment and the Marden Estate have been left without direct buses to North Tyneside Hospital as a result of recent route changes by commercial bus companies.

“Nexus has responded to local requests to restore these important links by proposing options which can be achieved using existing resources.

“Like all public bodies our budgets are under great pressure, but we are able to consult with local people on what can be achieved within the funding we have available now.

“Our proposals have been drawn up looking at the whole pattern of bus services in North Tyneside to make sure we meet local needs as far as we can.”

The options include altering the route of the 59 between 9.30am and 4pm to go through West Allotment instead of Shiremoor and to the Marden Estate instead of Whitley Bay.

A second option is to go through West Allotment instead of Shiremoor  but otherwise stick to the existing route to Whitley Bay; a third option is to leave the 59 as it is now.

The consultation is open until 13 December, after which all responses will be evaluated with a final report and decision reported back to communities in January.
