New and improved bus routes for north and east Newcastle will be launched by Nexus next month in response to feedback from customers.
The changes will take effect from Sunday, 24 March, and are being funded through the Government’s Bus Service Improvement plan.
They include:
• An improved 35 bus route will operate on a new route from Fawdon to Newcastle City Centre every 30 minutes. Buses will now include Osborne Road in Jesmond and also run on evenings and Sundays providing new links at these times to and from Fawdon, Kenton Park Shopping Centre, Osborne Road and Newcastle City Centre.
• A new route, the 653, will operate from Wallsend Metro station via Prospect Avenue in Wallsend and Walkergate to the Freeman Hospital. The new route restores a service lost in 2023 during cuts by commercial bus operators, providing unique connections to the hospital between 0700 and 1830, Monday to Saturday.
Huw Lewis, Customer Services Director at Nexus, said: “We are always listening to feedback from customers about the bus services they would like to see, and these changes reflect that.
“We carried out local consultation in Jesmond, Gosforth and Fawdon with the help of local councillors, and I’m pleased we’ve been able to extend the 35 route into the evening and Sundays.”
