A man has been fined for obstructing the doors of a Metro train, causing a delay to the service.

Orlando Bevan, 20, of Ludlow, Shropshire pleaded guilty to obstructing the doors on a Metro train, at Gateshead Metro Station on May 20, 2014.

Bevan appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on 10 September and was fined £333, ordered to pay a £33 victim surcharge and £90 costs.

Sharon Kelly, Director of Customer Services and Operations at DB Regio Tyne and Wear, which operates the Metro on behalf of Nexus, said: “We understand that some people think it’s okay and even helpful to hold the doors open. It is not okay, it’s dangerous and places yourself and others in danger. We take this matter very seriously and will prosecute any offenders, which could result in them being fined up to £1,000.

“The impact that obstructing the train doors can have is huge. It’s dangerous and causes damage which can lead to trains being taken out of service which has a knock on effect on reliability. If trains are taken out of service, it means passengers are delayed and it costs a lot of money to repair these trains too."
