Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising the Tyne and Wear Metro, is to replace the passenger lifts at Manors and Jesmond Metro stations in Newcastle as part of its £389m modernisation programme.

A total of four new lifts will be installed in a phased programme starting from Monday June 23.

The work will see the passenger lift cars replaced with brighter, cleaner, quieter and more energy efficient technology.

The work will be carried out in phases so that Jesmond and Manors Metro stations will always have one passenger lift in operation. The lifts on Platform One at both stations will be replaced first.

Passengers who require step free access at Jesmond should board a train from platform two, travel to West Jesmond, change platform and continue their journey. If travelling from South Gosforth to Jesmond, continue the journey to Haymarket, change platform, and return to Jesmond platform two.

Passengers who require step free access at Manors towards North Shields should board a train from platform two, travel to Monument, change platform and continue the journey. If travelling from Monument to Manors, continue the journey to Byker, change platform, and return to Manors platform two.

The work forms part of the £389m Metro all change modernisation programme which is seeing the system being transformed in an 11 year programme of work, including new-look trains and refurbished stations.

Nexus has already replaced six passenger lifts on the Metro system since the modernisation programme began in the summer of 2010.

Director of Rail and Infrastructure for Nexus, Raymond Johnstone, said: “I apologise to passengers for any disruption caused while the lifts are being replaced at Jesmond and Manors Metro stations.

“We have ensured that the project has been phased so that there is always step free access at both of these stations.

“As well as replacing lifts at the end of their life we will be saving energy in future and providing a brighter, better environment for passengers.”
