The Tyne and Wear Metro is playing host to some live music performances in Sunderland as part of operator Nexus’s biggest ever community arts programme on the network.

Musicians from Sunderland and the wider region will be performing live at Park Lane Interchange in the centre of Sunderland on Friday and Saturday, 2 and 3 September.

The Metro Takeover programme will see major regional arts organisations including Sunderland Culture, Dance City and Cultural Spring run community projects and commissions to be showcased at stations across the busy urban transit system.

The music performances, programmed by Sunderland Culture, will be taking place at Park between 1pm and 5.30pm on both days.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “It’s great to be working with Sunderland Culture to bring our community arts project back to the city with these live music performances.

“Metro has been turned into a platform for community arts and live performances by creative people from across North East England over the past year as part of the Metro Takeover, our biggest ever community arts programme.

“Creative arts and the barriers it breaks down are a great way to help people reconnect with Metro in their everyday lives.

"The performances we have lined up this week at Park Lane are a great opportunity for musicians from Sunderland and the wider region to showcase their talents.”

Between August 2021 and summer 2022 Metro has been brought to life in new ways through dance, song, music and visual arts projects involving people right across the region, funded by Arts Council England.

Friday’s performers: Labyrinthine Oceans; Rebecca Young; Louis Chrisp; Hayley McKay; Rob Heron; Paper Boats; Yusuf Yahaya; Lily Cooke; Hivemind.

Saturday’s performers: Pud!; Georgia May; Sour Mash Trio; Lesley Roley; Keddy Sowells; Ruby & the Mystery Cats; Ruth Lyon; AP3; Fire Lady Luck.
