Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, is giving passengers the chance to find out more about its £6m plan to redevelop the Metro ticket hall and platforms at Central Station in Newcastle.
Members of the public have the opportunity to view the plans in more detail and take the opportunity to speak to Nexus at a public consultation event on Tuesday, 4 March.
The event is being held in the Metro ticket concourse at Central Station between 8am and 11am, and then from 3pm to 6pm. The plans for the redevelopment of Central will be on display, with Nexus staff handing out leaflets and available to answer any questions about the project.
Nexus is planning the refurbishment of Metro’s Central Station as part of the ongoing £389m Metro: all change modernisation programme, with design work now underway and work on site planned to start in 2015.
Deputy Director General of Nexus, Tobyn Hughes, said: “We are keen to hear the views of our customers as we plan the redevelopment of the Metro concourse at Central Station.
“We are consulting widely on the proposals and getting the views of passengers is very important to us. This will ensure that the final designs will meet the needs of future station users and the city-region.”
Initial designs have been drafted aimed at improving accessibility and the whole passenger experience at this important gateway station for the city and region.
Nexus is bidding for external funding to meet part of the estimated £7-8m cost of the refurbishment, the majority of which will be funded from the main Metro: all change programme budget.
The consultation on the plans for Central Metro station runs until 28 March.
