Metro workers have undertaken a huge recovery operation in the wake of the widespread damage that was caused by Storm Malik.

Nexus, the public body which owns and manages Metro, said that maintenance teams had completed a vast quantity of repairs in the aftermath of the gales – which shut the network completely on Saturday.

The dedication of the frontline workforce meant that by this morning, Monday 31 Jan, the bulk of the Metro network was back up and running for customers as usual.

Nexus crews had to deal with fallen trees and downed overhead wires in multiple locations, after Storm Malik battered North East England. The works were on a similar to scale seen in the wake of Storm Arwen in November.

Repair work remains ongoing to fix damaged overhead lines between Palmersville and Northumberland Park.

Nexus is working on the repairs with Network Rail, as the Metro line runs parallel to the their lines in the Northumberland Park area.

Services remain suspended Benton to Monkseaton and a limited replacement bus service is operating and Metro tickets are accepted on local bus services.

Chief Operating Officer at Nexus, Martin Kearney, said: “Our workforce has once again risen to the challenge of another major storm, which caused widespread damage to the Metro network.

“Work is onging on a series of major repairs to get the Metro network fully re-opened.

“The recovery operation has been on a similar scale to the scenes we saw during Storm Arwen at the end of last year.

“My thanks go to our customers for their patience during that period of major disruption. And my thanks go to all of our employees who have worked so hard, both during and after Storm Malik hit. The engineers have got through an astonishing workload.

“Our teams were dealing with three incidents of fallen trees, downed and damaged overhead wires in North Tyneside, debris on overhead lines and other debris blown on to tracks.

“It was a really challenging weekend. The focus now is restoring the service between Benton and Monkseaton, and those works remain ongoing.”
