An update on Haymarket Metro station:

Metro Infrastructure Director, Stuart Clarke, said: “Haymarket Metro station is scheduled to re-open fully for customers at the beginning of July.

“I can confirm that the station is going to remain exit only until that time, while we complete the refurbishment of the middle escalator.

“We were aiming to have Haymarket fully open from Friday, 16 June, but the refurbishment that is being undertaken has been held up due to the availability of some essential parts that are needed to complete the work.

"As anticipated, we’ve seen improved reliability of the other two escalators since we made the decision to go to exit only as this has spread the footfall.  I apologise for the ongoing inconvenience, but this decision has at least allowed our customers to plan their journeys with more certainty and confidence.

“We are currently investing £2m in lifts and escalators on the Metro system to ensure they are fit for service for many more years to come. These assets are heavily used by customers, especially at those stations in busy city centres and they need renewal work.

“We’ve now almost completed the refurbishment of two of Haymarket’s three escalators.  Work on the third one is due to take place in the autumn, and we’ll make sure customers know in advance if that has any impact on them.”

A major programme of lift and escalator renewal is taking place on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

We are investing £2m in the project, which is set for completion this summer.

The work will ensure that essential assets at stations across the network will remain in service for a further 15 years.

All three escalators at Haymarket Metro station, used by five million customers a year, are being refurbished.

Ten lifts are being refitted, while the lift at Monument Metro station is being completely replaced.

The lifts will also get energy saving LED lighting and digital help points.
